What is turning?
Turning is a milling process that uses a rotating cutting tool, like an end mill, to remove material from a workpiece. The difference between turning and machining is that a lathe produces cylindrical shapes—turning long objects on a lathe, for example, will create a pencil—whereas machining creates flat parts. A turning center is essentially an entire machine shop in one integrated system.
What is lathe cutting?
Most people are familiar with how a lathe operates and what it can do. It’s an essential part of any machinist’s skill set and a must-have tool in any manufacturing facility, particularly when it comes to cutting metal. Essentially, when you’re dealing with materials that need to be turned or shaped, a lathe is one of your best options for doing so.
What types of jobs can be done on a lathe?
A lathe, also known as a turning lathe or screw-cutting lathe is a type of machine tool that can be used to create multiple items with repetitive, uniform shape and size. Many types of things can be made using a CNC lathe: clocks, mugs, pens, cups…the list goes on and on!
Is there a difference between turning and lathe work?
Some people think that turning and lathe are one in the same. This is absolutely not true. Turning is what’s known as a subtractive process. You begin with a large piece of material and cut off material in small amounts until you have what you want. With lathe work, however, it’s an additive process. You start with almost nothing at all and add on to it until you get what you want.
How do you decide which method to use?
The choice between machining centers or lathes is determined by application. While turning can be accomplished on a CNC lathe, some tasks are easier and faster to accomplish on a true machining center. As an example, in-the-round work is more easily done on a true machining center with live tooling because it allows you to rough out your part quickly and easily while maintaining an extremely accurate finish size.
Should I send my parts to your shop or have you come to me?
This is an excellent question, and one that should definitely be addressed in your business plan. You can save money if you choose to deliver your part to our shop; however, we cannot guarantee that your part will be completed by a certain date, as we may not be able to work on it for two weeks or so. If you want us to come out and do a site-visit with you, then just make sure you schedule an appointment beforehand.
What types of materials can you cut with a CNC lathe and turning services?
Most materials we use for manufacturing can be machined on a CNC lathe or turning machine. What types of materials are you trying to make? Are they made from metal, wood, plastic, or something else entirely? Every material has its own set of unique characteristics that require a different approach when working with it. Let’s say you’re going to make a custom prototype part using a special alloy of aluminum.
Do I need any special equipment for this service?
Yes, most of our clients buy a lathe or mill from us. Or if you already have one, make sure that it’s in good working condition. We can work with just about anything, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Where are your facilities located, and how does that affect shipping costs?
All our service centers are located in North America, specifically New Jersey and Ontario. Please note that all orders must be shipped via ground to ensure tracking. Air freight is not available at this time.
Are there any design considerations I should keep in mind when working with your company to create custom pieces?
Design consideration is a key part of working with us. Our design team is extremely experienced and will have many considerations in mind before they begin creating your piece. We always work closely with our customers to ensure we can create something that fits their needs and matches their vision. If you have any questions during or after your conversation with our design department, please do not hesitate to contact a sales representative so that we can answer any questions that you may have about designing and building custom parts for your project!
Can you give me an idea about pricing and turnaround times for different pieces or jobs?
I do not want to share that information on our website. You will need to contact us with your specifics in order to get a firm quote. We have 2 different lathes, so please let us know which machine you would like to use and how many pieces you need machined.
Please be as detailed as possible about what your piece is and how you would like it done. If you have a drawing or idea, we can also do reverse engineering from that. Let me know if there are any other questions!
