iPhone 14 series was launched worldwide on 7th September, 2022 at Apple’s ‘Far Out’ event. As the earlier rumours suggested, the iPhone 14 series is made up of four models:
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
The Plus and Max models sport larger screens where the other two are just enough to fit in hands.
The highlight must be the pill-shaped front camera (with advanced face ID technology) cut out in the pro models which has replaced the long running notch design since iPhone X. However, unlike previous years, only Pro models are powered by an updated A16 bionic chip whereas non-pro models get last year’s A15 bionic chip. In the US the latest handsets will not get any SIM tray and will only come with E-sim activation. These models come with satellite emergency communication technology that will be used to send SOS via satellite. From iPhone 13 to iPhone 14, is It a Big Leap?
If you have recently bought an iPhone 13, there’s nothing to feel bad about. iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are so similar that it will be hard to justify the bump in price if not it’s the plus model with a luxury of 6.7 inches Super Retina XDR OLED display. The marginal difference between these two are the 5-core GPU in 14 contrast with the 4-core GPU in 13, auto focus enabled front camera in the 14 against the fixed focused front camera in the 13. And lastly, iPhone 14 features F1.5 lens in contrast to the F1.6 lens in the 13 which may improve the low-light performance slightly. Otherwise,.everything is exactly the same.
What about Pro’s?
When it comes to pro models, the company has used a stainless steel frame which is corrosion resistant. The display is a 6.1 inches Super Retina XDR display with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits which has always-on-display mode for the first time. The screen refresh rate can go as low as 1Hz to save battery. Protecting the front side of the handset is ceramic shield which is claimed to be the toughest in any mobile phone glass.
The front design is a complete overhaul from the last gen as a pill-shaped cut out is introduced. Apple is calling it ‘Interactive space’ which can be used to control background apps such as maps, music players etc.
The pro models are powered by the most powerful A16 bionic chip sets. The CPU is 40 percent faster than the competition. The GPU has 50 percent more bandwidth and a 16-core Neural Engine.
Pro models sport a 48 megapixel main camera with OIS, 12 megapixel 3x optical zoom camera (f/2.8) and a 12 megapixel ultra wide camera (f/2.2) with 120° field-of-view.
iPhone 14 Pro Max model has a larger 6.7 inches screen with every other feature identical to iPhone 14.
