Name as many chocolates as you can in the next 10 seconds. Milk chocolate will likely be in there, as will white chocolate, dark chocolate, and even Belgian chocolate. Tasty.
Of course, there is a world of chocolate out there that even the finest connoisseurs haven’t heard of, and indeed, Austria is coming to the front in 2022 with its native chocolate, the aptly named Mozart chocolate, being at the top of many people’s Christmas lists.
Yet, why? What is it about this chocolate that has made it so popular? Here is a short guide to this tasty treat, and why it is well worth trying by the end of the year.
What Its Made Of
If you were to visit Salzburg, you would find Mozart chocolate or mozartkugel in every shop around, and there is a reason why. It is tasty, and something of a national symbol.
One reason is what it is made from. It is made from nougat, pistachio, and marzipan, and covered in chocolate, making it ever so sweet and morish. The word ‘kugel’ means that this chocolate has a similar shape to truffles, (a sphere) and is usually very delectable with a cup of tea or coffee.
Its Age
Sadly, no, Mozart the composer had very little to do with the making of this tasty treat, but it was inspired by him in a way, hence its popularity.
Indeed, in 1891, 100 years after the passing of the world-famous composer, a confectioner known as Paul Furst simply invented them to be a status of Mozart’s passing. However, he forgot the patent and soon, every chocolatier in Salzburg had access to the recipe, adding bits and pieces to make it their own. So, it is an old recipe that is still tasty today.
Its Status
The descendants of Furst eventually got the patent (phew) and now, you can only get the original Furst Mozart chocolate in the family-run cafes around Salzburg. So, in a way, these chocolate snacks have become something of a status symbol. Of course, you can also order them online if you are not able to visit the historic site, as they are delicious and easily shipped.
As you can imagine, it is also a great gift for anyone in your family or friends who are fans of Mozart.
It’s Affordable
Okay, so by this point, you may have picked out some keywords like the date that the chocolate was invented, its link to a long-dead composer and confectioner, and the patenting of the product. Plus, you will likely be wondering if it is affordable to buy. Yes, it is, and many websites allow you to purchase this chocolate for less than some of the more modern brands.
Its Fame
As mentioned, you may not have heard about Mozart’s chocolate until now, but it has international fame. Many of the companies who have mass-produced the imitation recipe ship it globally, and it often makes appearances at chocolate fairs. So, it is well worth trying, solely to see why it is so coveted the world over. It has even been mixed with liqueurs, which means you can try it in drink form if you wish.
